(SHALLOTTE, NC - BRUNSWICK COUNTY) —Democracy Green will host a press conference on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 1:00 PM in the front yard of Floyd Road residents, a predominantly Black neighborhood contaminated with PFAS Chemicals in their drinking water supply. Join Democracy Green, alongside impacted residents of Brunswick County Stewards of the Environment, and organizational leaders, as they call out Chemours for the continued targeting of Black, brown, and low-wealth communities as dumping sites for their toxic waste. Speakers will be available to answer media inquiries related to the PFAS and GenX contamination in the Cape Fear River watershed; Chemours Netherland efforts to dump 4.4 million pounds of GenX in Southeast North Carolina in the next 12 months. Environmental Justice leaders and organizations support the US EPA’s recent decision to temporarily reverse the decision.

During this press conference, the group will present a petition of signatures from environmental justice leaders and organizations calling for a permanent reversal of the decision to allow the import of 4.4 million pounds of Chemours’ waste materials containing GenX to North Carolina.

Approximately 1.6 million people receive their drinking water from the river. PFAS and GenX have been detected in the well water of residences and the drinking water system of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA). Brunswick County was ranked as the number 1 county for PFAS contamination in their drinking water and the number 1 county for all cancer deaths in neighborhoods with the highest PFAS levels.
