Democracy Green

Our Wins

Over the years, Democracy Green has led campaigns, disaster, relief, rescue support programs, and education workshops for communities, community leaders, elected and appointed officials, and agency department leaders to prioritize transformation for marginalized communities.

Democracy Green has directly contributed funds and grants, conducted fund advisement, and convened community meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, funders, and communities.

We've had some major wins thanks to the tireless commitment of our team and board, great community partnerships, and agency collaborations.

To Heal the People is to Heal the Land.

Town of Maysville

In 2019, the leadership of the town of Maysville made the brave decision to disconnect residents from the town's drinking water supply due to the emergency of PFAS contamination found in the water supply. The Town of Maysville continued the good fight for funding to afford the water filtration needed to serve the town.

February 2023, Democracy Green joined alongside US EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan and NC DEQ Secretary Elizabeth Biser for a significant announcement in the Town of Maysville. Democracy Green Board President La'Meshia Whittington made comments alongside Admin. Regan and Sec. Biser, announcing $2 billion in grant funds to treat PFAS for the entire nation, which would serve communities like Maysville in their efforts to provide clean drinking water for their residents.

Democracy Green then connected Manager Brown to a media outlet to elevate the story of Maysville. Read Manager Brown's Op-ed here.

We Did It:
Town of Maysville Opens a New Water Treatment Plant

In December 2023, after 4.5 years of PFAS contamination, Maysville opened its new water treatment plant. Democracy Green was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting and tour of the new Plant.

This is what good governance looks like.

"This is the mission and heart of Democracy Green, supporting and fighting alongside communities and community leaders in tandem with government agencies to achieve a fair environment for all." - Sanja Whittington, Executive Director of Democracy Green.
